CLASSICS PART II - FRI 1st NOVEMBER

Well somehow we got there - lol. Set off with a wing and a prayer without looking at a map and bold confidence that 'we'd get there somehow'. Well thanks to couple of phone calls for direction and big time detours down to the South Coast we did arrive about 11pm.

The venue is in superb surrounding on the Longleat estate (yes same place as the safari park and yes we heard all the playing jungle jokes already). The club is just behind the country mannor there - very impressively light up in the dark - kinda of felt like we should have been black tie for a superb dinner party function not trainered up for some ravin action.

The club is called Oscar's which had conjured up all sorts of dodgy nightclub visions for me but what greeted us was probably the best small club I've ever been in.

The main room is cirular. On the level you walk in on is the bar to your left and then in a circle round the dancefloor, chill out areas with seating etc. The dancefloor in the middle of the room is about 6 lowered about 6 feet from the bar level.. So you can go for it on the main floor - watch over the action from behind rails on the bar level or chill out round the side. Also there is raised platform overlooking everything for dancing on and even a podeum.

Finally the DJ booth is at the head of the circle and looks out at the whole club - or looking at it another way - as the DJ the whole club all levels is pointed your direction. The pressure is on - lol.

It was 11pm and the place was warming up - beginning to jump around to the D&B that was playing. After a bit of wandering we bumped into Wink (the promoter) and before he could say 'I'm shitting it' the one like the Bingo Berty was on the decks rinsing out the oldskool. Just to top this club off the DJ set up is superb - the monitors etc so damn good this place is easier to DJ in than your own bedroom. And you get your own sound and light engineer to keep moaning at ya about the levels - lol - actually dude was well helpful as you'll see later.

Nerves or not Bingo launched into a pretty underground selection of 92 tunes, mixing was cool and as the set went on I could see he was getting more and more into it - a well good set for first time playing out.

After Bingo came Wink who turned the bpm's towards 95 jungle - a few classic like the Lighter and the crowd was eating out of his hand. Big ups to the crowd, was a really friendly atmosphere and everyone was going for it egged on by some pretty impressive lighting - all that wasn't there was a full on lazer - sorted out by our friendly lighting engineer.

Bumped into Mike - DJ Creativity - was good to finally meet up with ya m8. Bizarrely by the end of the night Mike's m8 was on the mic - like said was very friendly and easy atmopshere.

Easygroove had arrived by now - was bit of gossip Robbie Dee might have been coming with him - which would have been da bomb - would have been wicked to DJ with Robbie Dee on the mic - unfortunately it wasn't to be :(

Up came 1am pretty quick and it was time for me to get on the deks. Fcuk me - it was so much fun. Was so busy shaking hands with all the smiling

faces in front of me I'm not sure how found time to DJ. Bit of an athem set by normal standards but was right selection I reckon cause crowd was jumping and pumping - think they might have prefered some D&B really but what they got was an early 92 piano set - few anthems like Don't Go, Dreamworld and some lesser known ones like Lets Go (Remix) - Phantasy. A question of feeding em enough anthems to keep going while slipping em the a crafty underground tunes too.

Now Steinhowser headphones have a ridiculously short lead. This mixer was ridiculously big and the headphone lead was top right hand corner. Was taking all the tiny little lead just to get from headphone socket to me head. As a result the lead was dangling around all over the mixer and at one point even managed to do some no hands crossfader action courtesy of the lead getting tangled in the crossfader (Gary swears sounded like some cool DJ trick - but I'm not so sure). Up pops the sound/lighting engineeer and tapes the lead to the side of the mixer for me so can't happen again. Man I love this place.

To finish the night off came the big attraction Easygroove. Starting off on the on the mellow piano tip where I'd left off he gradually started to build up the pace. Into the 93 darkside saw me and the Berty on the raised dancefloor giving it large dance manouveres joined by a lovely but munted E head - lol. Finally Easygroove launched into the full mentalist techno mad stuff that he's known best for.

A quick tour from Wink round the other rooms of the club which weren't open that night and an explantion of how the big Boxing Day night will be using all rooms and it was time for us to head back up the motorway to civilisation - well Reading and London.

On the way home I realised this was one of the best nights I've had in a long time - alright DJ'ing is a big buzz but even if I hadn't played would have been wicked. Now just can't wait for Boxing Day return - this one promises to be even bigger.

Shouts to Gary for driving me and to Wink for sorting it all out.
